The 488 GTB blends classic Ferrari lines with the (at launch) latest aerodynamic aids and was a big deal for Ferrari. Not only because its predecessor the 458 Italia had been so successful– but because it marked a change of philosophy for their mid-engined supercar.

Gone the naturally aspirated 4.5-litre V8 and in its place a downsized, direct-injection 3902cc twin-turbocharged flat-plane-crank V8. More efficient but also massively more potent.

Ferrari could have dropped the ball by turbocharging the 488 GTB, but it of course achieved the complete opposite and produced an automotive masterpiece (it made history by taking the Engine of the Year title on three consecutive occasions (2016, 2017 and 2018), before being named Best of the Best of the last 20 years in the 2018 International Engine of the Year Awards).

With 661bhp and 560lb ft of torque, the 488 GTB does the supercar performance piece with considerable ease: 62mph arrives in a claimed 3.0sec and the GTB will go beyond 205mph. But it’s the 8.3sec 0-124mph time that drops your jaw; that’s three tenths quicker than a Lamborghini Aventador LP750-4 SV, a tenth up on a McLaren 650S and a full two seconds quicker than the iconic Ferrari F40.

What makes the 488 most enjoyable is its balance and exceptional adjustability. Like the 458 Italia and Speciale before it, the 488 GTB allows you to drive with the abandon that you would a hot hatch or Caterham not a mid-engined supercar. The 488 GTB is incredibility forgiving and with simply astonishing levels of balance no matter what the speed. But such is the rate of acceleration the GTB delivers it needs to be.

The Ferrari 488 GTB is fast, fun to drive and features head-turning looks, while the twin-turbo V8 in the back is a masterpiece, delivering supercar performance in a usable package
