Now fitted as standard to the ’23 MY Morgan Plus Six, this car features Electronic Stability Control, ABS and Driver and passenger airbags

Morgan is no stranger to BMW power plants having used BMW V8s for years, but the Plus Six is the first Morgan ever to use a turbocharged engine. In this application the straight six makes 335bhp and drives through the same eight-speed automatic transmission, which you can of course control via paddles behind the steering wheel.

Unlike its BMW-powered siblings the Plus Six has a dry weight of only 1075kg, (little more than a Mazda MX-5) and achieves the sprint to 62mph in just 4.2sec and on to a top speed of 165mph.

The Plus Six gets the new Morgan aluminium CX platform which is not only twice as stiff as the previous-generation chassis, it is slightly bigger and lightweight to boot.

It’s a Morgan, of course there’s wood! An ash frame sits atop the chassis, to which the aluminium exterior panel work is attached. The cabin is mostly traditional, with a set of analogue instruments and just the tiniest of electronic displays for vital information.

What’s it like to drive?

This thing’s quite an experience. You’ll want to go roof down, naturally. A glance around reveals relatively few BMW-familiar components – by and large it’s all Morgan and all quite wonderful to behold. The view over that long bonnet doesn’t hurt, and the feeling of sitting far back, somewhere over the rear axle, is one that defines the Plus Six experience.

Coming in at well over a third of a ton lighter than anything else using this engine, the Plus Six feels genuinely quick and incredibly entertaining.
